The Substellar Mass Function: A Bayesian Approach

چکیده
We report our efforts to constrain the form of the low-mass star and brown dwarf mass function via Bayesian inference. Recent surveys of M, L, and T dwarfs in the local solar neighborhood are an essential component of our study. Uncertainties in the age distribution of local field stars make reliable inference complicated. We adopt a wide range of plausible assumptions about the rate of galactic star formation and show that their deviations from a uniform rate produce little effect on the resulting luminosity function for a given mass function. As an ancillary result, we calculate the age distribution for M, L, and T spectral types. We demonstrate that late-L dwarfs, in particular, are systematically younger than objects with earlier or later spectral types, with a mean age of 3 Gyr. Finally, we use a Bayesian statistical formalism to evaluate the probability of commonly used mass functions in light of recent discoveries. We consider three functional forms of the mass function, include a two-segment power law, a single power law with a low-mass cutoff, and a log-normal distribution. Our results show that, at a 60% confidence level, the power-law index, α, for the low-mass arm of a two-segment power law has a value between -0.5 and 0.5 for objects with

E-Bayesian Approach in A Shrinkage Estimation of Parameter of Inverse Rayleigh Distribution under General Entropy Loss Function
Whenever approximate and initial information about the unknown parameter of a distribution is available, the shrinkage estimation method can be used to estimate it. In this paper, first the $ E $-Bayesian estimation of the parameter of inverse Rayleigh distribution under the general entropy loss function is obtained. Then, the shrinkage estimate of the inverse Rayleigh distribution parameter i...
متن کاملA Bayesian approach for image denoising in MRI
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a notable medical imaging technique that is based on Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). MRI is a safe imaging method with high contrast between soft tissues, which made it the most popular imaging technique in clinical applications. MR Imagechr('39')s visual quality plays a vital role in medical diagnostics that can be severely corrupted by existing noise duri...
متن کاملBayesian Estimation of Shift Point in Shape Parameter of Inverse Gaussian Distribution Under Different Loss Functions
In this paper, a Bayesian approach is proposed for shift point detection in an inverse Gaussian distribution. In this study, the mean parameter of inverse Gaussian distribution is assumed to be constant and shift points in shape parameter is considered. First the posterior distribution of shape parameter is obtained. Then the Bayes estimators are derived under a class of priors and using variou...
متن کاملLuminosity Functions of Young Clusters: Modeling the Substellar Mass Regime
We predict near-infrared luminosity functions of young (5 Myr to 1 Gyr) star clusters by combining evolutionary models of very low-mass (1 MJ to 0.15 M ) dwarfs with empirical bolometric corrections. We identify several characteristic features in our results. These can be attributed to three causes: (1) deuterium burning in the most massive substellar objects; (2) methane absorption in bodies w...
متن کاملEvidence for a Turnover in the Initial Mass Function of Low-mass Stars and Substellar Objects: Analysis from an Ensemble of Young Clusters
We present a combined analysis of the low-mass initial mass function (IMF) for seven star-forming regions. We first demonstrate that the ratios of stars to brown dwarfs are consistent with a single underlying IMF. By assuming that the underlying IMF is the same for all seven clusters and by combining the ratio of stars to brown dwarfs from each cluster, we constrain the shape of the brown dwarf...
